Pulau Seringat which forms part of Singapore’s southern islands has been zoned residential by the government under its new Land Use Plan, after being earmarked as a potential casino resort six years ago.
Although some areas are still rustic, this tiny island south of Sentosa is showing signs of progress with paved roads, covered shelters and a visitors’ centre that welcomes boats docking at the jetty, The Straits Times reported.
With its idyllic crescent-shaped beach, the island is a popular destination for swimmers and couples taking their wedding photos.
To retain its exclusivity, Nicholas Mak, Research Head at SLP International, expects the island to house luxury developments rather than mass market homes.
But he noted that island living will only take off once transport arrangements within the area are smoothened.
“You cannot have a man driving his Ferrari, parking it at VivoCity, then waiting for a ferry to take him home.”
He suggested the development of an underwater tunnel to connect the island to the mainland, in addition to a marina for private boats.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of National Development (MND) revealed that it has no further development plans for the island at this time; hence it will be retained for recreational use.
