New site for sports facility up for tender

The Singapore Land Authority has released a new site to be developed into a sports facility, and sports enthusiasts can look forward to a new futsal court or baseball batting area.

The site is situated underneath a flyover at Jurong Hill. It spans slightly more than 5,900 square metres, with a monthly rental of about S$3,900. The site is up for tender on a three-year lease and interested bidders have to submit their bids by Jan 6, 2015.

While the site is not near any residential estates, its proximity to factories, eating places and car parks makes it a viable option for sports facility operators. This is the second such site to be released, the first being the land under the Thomson flyover which has since been transformed into a futsal court.

Mr Derek Cheong, who operates the futsal court under the Thomson flyover, said: “With land cost being so high in Singapore, especially residential and commercial, to operate a sports facility will really require a large vast area of space.

“Having land that is not being utilised, like the one under the flyover, will give operators a very good chance to come in and operate and lower their rental rates, which makes the business viable.”
