More residential projects to receive Construction Excellence Award

More residential projects will receive the Construction Excellence Award this year.

The award recognises construction projects that have demonstrated the highest standards of construction excellence in Singapore, particularly in project management, technical inputs and workmanship.

The Building and Construction Authority (BCA) says 10 awards and seven certificates of merit will be given to builders of residential buildings this year, compared to five awards and five merit certificates given out in 2011.

Mr Lai Huen Poh, chairman of the Construction Excellence Award Assessment Committee comprising a panel of judges from the industry, said: “The increase is largely attributed to more high quality condominiums, fuelled by improvements to construction quality and workmanship standards as well as higher expectations for building quality.”

Residential developments such as The Arte, The Orchard Residences, The Cascadia, Wilkie Studio and Marina Bay Residences emerged top performers in the residential building category for construction excellence.

BCA says these projects scored above 94 points in the Construction Quality Assessment System (CONQUAS) – a standard assessment system on the quality of building projects.

It added that these developments also meet other criteria such as safety, sustainability, buildability, and innovativeness.

BCA says the average CONQUAS score for buildings in general has risen to 85.7 compared to 76.5 ten years ago.

There are over 47,000 private residential units committed or assessed under the BCA Quality Mark scheme to date.

Local builder Woh Hup clinched the highest number of Construction Excellence Awards for the second consecutive year.

It received three awards for its projects – The Cascadia, Marina Bay Residences and The Seafront on Meyer.

The other winners of the Construction Excellence Award include Shuqun Secondary School, Ion Orchard and Khoo Teck Puat Hospital.

Shuqun Secondary School received a CONQUAS score of 93, the highest score under the institutional building category to date.

BCA will be giving out a total of 17 award and 11 certificates of merit on 24 May.
