Metro to close City Square Mall outlet at the end of the year

Metro will close its City Square Mall outlet when its lease expires at the end of the year, said City Developments Limited (CDL) and Metro Holdings Limited in a joint statement on Monday (Sep 14).

The mall “will be introducing new concepts and brands by next Chinese New Year (February 2016). Tenants with these brands will take the place of Metro Department Store,” said Metro and CDL, which owns the mall.

The statement added that the move was part of the mall’s ongoing lease renewal exercises “which involves reviewing customer feedback and improving the tenant mix so that it is more relevant and appealing to our shoppers”. The last exercise was conducted in 2012 and brands such as Golden Village, Daiso, Uniqlo, Toys R Us and Babies R Us were introduced to the mall.

Metro, which started operating at City Square Mall in 2009, said the move was part of its plans to consolidate resources in light of difficult trading conditions.

Metro had closed its outlet at Compass Point in August when the lease expired. With the closure of the City Square Mall outlet, Metro will be left with three stores in Singapore, at Centrepoint, Paragon and Causeway Point.
