JTC to build multi-user cheicmals hub for SMEs in Tuas

A high-rise specialised complex designed to house chemical companies involved in the manufacturing, blending and distribution of chemicals, including chemicals classified as dangerous goods, will be built in western Singapore at an estimated cost of S$67 million, JTC said on Friday (Oct 31).

The multi-user chemicals hub at Tuas View – the first of its kind in Singapore – will cater primarily to small and medium enterprises (SMEs). When ready in the second quarter of 2016, the complex will support the growth of the chemicals sector, which is now the biggest contributor to manufacturing output.

“By clustering chemical companies, large and small, in one location with shared common facilities such as fire-fighting systems, companies can enjoy economies of scale, save on capital costs, and achieve land savings of up to 50 per cent,” Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry Lee Yi Shyan said during a ground-breaking ceremony for the new complex.

Mr Lee said JTC has also set aside space for research and development activities within the hub, and companies can use the allocated space to pursue R&D activities such as formulation and testing new compounds to meet the changing needs of their customers.

Other key projects by JTC to support the chemicals industry include the recently-opened Jurong Rock Caverns, South-east Asia’s first underground commercial liquid hydrocarbons storage facility; the continued development and enhancement of Jurong Island where many chemicals plants are located; and the development of Lubes Park, a specialised park for the lubricants industry.
