Geylang Serai community civic centre to open by 2018

Work on a community civic centre in Geylang Serai which promotes Singapore’s cultural heritage will begin soon.

The centre, called Wisma Geylang Serai, will house a community club and other social and community-related facilities. It will be fully operational by 2018. The ground breaking ceremony for the centre was held Sunday morning (Sep 20).

A pedestrian network will also be built to enhance accessibility and connectivity to other developments in the area, including Geylang Serai market, Joo Chiat Complex and Paya Lebar MRT station.

Minister of State for National Development Maliki Osman said: “Wisma Geylang Serai is a meaningful project which embodies the hard work and contributions of the public, people and private sectors. Influences of the rich distinct local heritage have been incorporated into the architecture of the civic centre and along the streetscape of the Geylang Serai precinct.”

Dr Maliki, who is also Mayor for South East District and is overseeing the project, added that Wisma Geylang Serai will anchor Geylang Serai as one of the vibrant places in Singapore for arts, heritage and culture.
