New MRT stations and train service usually spell good news for retailers.
But stores at CityLink Mall are seeing the reverse, after the new Circle Line (CCL) stations in the area opened last month.
On average, business has dropped by 20 to 30 per cent.
Some stores even reported a drop of 40 per cent – one week after the line opened.
That’s because commuters can use the Promenade and Esplanade stations and bypass City Hall MRT – and give CityLink Mall a miss.
While the impact on food and beverage outlets is minimal, others – especially those selling apparel – have been hit hard.
Jonathan Chan, assistant shop manager at Adidas, says: “I can see business drop by around 40 per cent, compared to before the launch of the Circle Line. Hopefully, after Marina Bay Sands is opened, there’re more crowds coming through the CityLink Mall, then we can pick up the business again.”
